Another rare and hard to find 1960s UK Jazz Stereo LP record from our private collection
"Off Centre" by The John Cameron Quartet, rare, saught after LP of 60s Brit-Jazz.
Original Decca Deram LP SML 1044 (Stereo) with First Pressing details on run out matrix. ZAL 8843 1W / ZAL 8844 1W.
This is classic late 60s brit jazz, with hints toward the freer music of the time. The line up is magnificent with Cameron, more renowned at the time for his film scores (such as Kes ) and his work with Donovan, more than holding his own with Harold McNair, Danny Thompson and Tony Carr.
It has been said that McNair's flute solo on The Troublemaker is one of his finest recorded ones.
Reviewing this in November 1969 esteemed Jazz Critic Alun Morgan wrote ...
"I must confess that I found the "Off Centre" album the most enjoyable (of the three in this review), possibly because it is the most orthodox! Two of the tracks - Splat and Off Centre - are very heavily bop influenced with Cameron sounding like a busy Bud Powell and Harold McNair playing very confident and almost Parkerish alto. Admittedly some of the other compositions are more adventurous in concept and I must single out the bass playing of Danny Thompson, but in the main it is music which veers close to things familiar rather than the outer limits. For a man best known for his film and TV work (he wrote the "Twenty Four Hours" theme and the music for "Poor Cow", to take two random examples) pianist John Cameron exhibits a very professional knowledge of jazz." ...
