ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful LP, quite elusive in any pressing, from Spanish HMV (LALP 475, Spanish pressing, red/silver semi-circle label, mono) preserves one of the glories of the Oistrakh discography: his paring of Tartini’s Sonata in G minor “Devil’s Trill” (Kreisler’s arrangement) with Mozart’s Violin Sonata in B-flat Major K. 454 – both recorded in London on 16 February 1956. Throughout, Oistrakh is accompanied by the brilliant pianist Vladimir Yampolsky.
The tone is unmistakable, as is the generous personality, charm, and fantasy of the artist. What at first glance seems a strange coupling, proves instead quite fascinating, each work mirroring the different sides of Oistrakh’s playing – the high-flying virtuoso and the more classically restrained musician. Under Oistrakh’s bow both rank as minor masterpieces, captivating from first till last. A treasurable example of the art of the violin.
Special Note – I:
*This particular pressing is rather unique in that it is, to my knowledge, the only issue of this performance on the red/silver semi-circle Nipper label – in other countires (e.g., England, Italy, France, Holland, et al.) this performance was issued on the Columbia label, invariably with a blue/gold or blue/silver. In Spain, however, the distinction between Columbia label and His Master’s Voice label artists was not always maintained. Spanish Columbia did have an LCX prefix (like the FCX or 33CX) that was used under the Regal moniker, though the Regal catalog seems to have been rather small. Most Spanish EMI issues, like the Oistrakh offered here, used the His Master’s Voice – La Voz de su Amo – label. Well, one for the Oistrakh collector who has everything (-:
Special Note – II:
These lovely La Voz de su Amo issues are quite rare, particularly as Spain's record industry was very much limited by the exigencies of life under the Franco dictatorship. Nevertheless, these Spanish HMV pressings were every bit as fine as their English, American, and German counterparts – an interesting acquisition for the true Oistrakh collector, preserving one of his finest recordings. This record was manufactured by the Barcelona-based Catalan firm of Quintilla y Cardona, S.L.
Incidentally, although Boilly's lithograph certainly takes center stage, the wonderful design of the jacket can be attributed to the wonderful Atelier Cassandre. There are fine liner notes, in Spanish only, by Jean Cotté.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There are two small tears at the open edge of the jacket, as well as bumping at corners, edgewear, ringwear, and discoloration to the rear panel. However, there are no seampslits, owners’ markings, bends, or other defects and the jacket remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD. Though there is light surface noise throughout, in general the playback remains enjoyable. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
