ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This exceedinly rare 10" LP from the pre-Melodiya Soviet label CCCP / Aprelevsky Zavod (D 5540/41, pressed in the USSR, red/gold lighthouse label, mono) features David Oistrakh's peerless account of Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor Op. 99, recorded with Evgeny Mravinsky and the mighty Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra on 30 November 1956.
One of the remarkable things about this particular pressing is that one can very clearly hear the acoustics of the Grand Hall of the Leningrad Philharmonic, Oistrakh’s silvery tone soaring into its upper reaches – it is quite amazing.
Oistrakh, to whom it is dedicated, understood this work as perhaps no one else has and the intensity he brings to this score, be it in the most inward or extrovert passage, has never been quite matched by anyone, despite the many superlative recordings it has since received. Mravinsky's darkly powerful and haunting accompaniment is at one with Oistrakh's conception and this work has never sounded more harrowing than here – a landmark in the work's discography and an object lesson in great interpretation.
Wrote the outstanding critic Jonathan Woolf for MusicWeb-International: “Once more a famed commercial disc, first issued on Melodiya D5540/1, D03658/9 and D033449/52. Reissued on labels ranging alphabetically from Bruno to Telefunken - to take in Period and Parlophone. His live Czech performance of the following year was faster and tighter but this recording of the work is an astounding contribution to recorded music and one that renders specifics unnecessary. It's obviously not to be confused with the New York/Mitropoulos recording of the same year on Columbia. Though other examples of his way with the work have appeared, not least those with his son Maxim, this and the Mitropoulos are the reference recordings.”
CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is bumping at corners, slight edgwear, and some creasing, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and attractive. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. While there are a few slightly noisy passages, in general the playback is quite fine. However, those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
