ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Quite rare in this particular pressing, this outstanding LP – a beautiful collector's copy – from EMI/Electrola (1C 063-02 400, German pressing, gold label – ED1, stereo) features David Oistrakh's atmospheric and harrowing account of Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor Op. 99, recorded at EMI Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London on 25 November 1972 with the violinist's son Maxim conducting the New Philharmonia Orchestra (producer: R.K. Anderson /engineer: Neville Boyling).
It is said that Oistrakh preferred this later account to his earlier reading with Mitropoulos on Columbia and though that performance remains quite special, with a frisson not unlike that which Oistrakh achieved with Mravinsky on the podium, his final rendition of the work is not without its own claims, the scale larger, and Oistrakh's playing boasting a more inward quality that imparts a greater sense of mystery. Maxim's accompaniment is first rate.
Incidentally, there are fine liner notes provided on the reverse side of the jacket in both English by Heinrich Lindlar.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the album appears as new – a truly lovely collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and the playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
