ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Fairly elusive in any pressing, this handsome LP from Angel Records (35356, label iteration unknown - presumably red/silver Angel label, English* LP pressing, mono, dowel spine) preserves one of the great violin records, as well as one of glories of the David Oistrakh discography: his paring of Tartini’s Sonata in G minor “Devil’s Trill” (in the Kreisler arrangement) with Mozart’s Violin Sonata in B-flat Major K. 454 – both recorded in London on 16 February 1956.  Throughout, he is accompanied by his long-time recital partner, the brilliant pianist Vladimir Yampolsky. 

It is possible the LP was pressed in the UK, but the jacket was definitely printed in the USA. 

The striking cover art reproduces a detail from Louis Leopold Boilly's 1824 lithograph.

The tone is unmistakable, as is the generous personality, charm, and fantasy of the artist.   What at first glance seems a strange coupling, proves instead quite fascinating, each work mirroring the different sides of Oistrakh’s playing – the high-flying virtuoso and the more classically restrained musician.  Under Oistrakh’s bow both rank as minor masterpieces, captivating from first till last.  A treasurable example of the art of the violin.

A minor note: Although Boilly's lithograph certainly takes center stage, the wonderful design of the jacket can be attributed to the wonderful Atelier Cassandre.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. The shrink warp is torn, but not completely and this remains an unplayed record. There is minor crushing at the upper and lower corners where the dowel spine is - overall, an excellent collector's copy.

Though unplayed, I will conservatively grade the LP as NM.
