ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome LP – a superb collector's copy – from German Columbia (STC 91134, German pressing, white/gold label – ED1 – equivalent to SAX 2411, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features David Oistrakh's Olympian performance of Brahms's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 77, taped 17-19 June 1960 in the warm acoustis of the Salle Wagram, Paris with Otto Klemperer and the French National Radio Orchestra, one of the indisputably great recordings of this work.
Wrote The Gramophone in its December 1989 review: "A different world of communication awaits the listener in Oistrakh's recording of the Brahms Concerto with Klemperer. At once Klemperer's magisterial conducting commands the attention, and the fine French orchestra play with Philharmonia-like strength and commitment. Oistrakh matches his great conductor with playing of masterly intellectual control and insight allied to a perfect technique. His account of the first movement is deeply affecting and richly communicative, yet quite without any mannerism and totally at the service of the music. In the slow movement Oistrakh's glorious tone-quality and eloquent, soaring lyricism suit the music perfectly, and the finale is delivered in an appropriately bluff, vigorously good-humoured fashion. Fortunately the 1961 recording still sounds well."
Incidentally, the cover art reproduces Jacopo da Empoli's "Susanna at the Bath", held at Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History). The liner notes on the reverse side are in German only.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor bumping/wear at corners, as well as mild discoloration, more so to the rear panel, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT++. The surfaces are not absolutely CD silent, but in general the playback is superb – again, an excellent collector's copy.
