ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome LP from Telefunken (BLE 14109, German Decca · Telefunken pressing, black/gold label, mono – no stereo edition exists, original inner sleeve included) features David Oistrakh's Olympian reading of Brahms's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 77, made in 1950 with the USSR State Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Kyrill Kondrashin.
This was Oistrakh's first studio essay of this work and it is imbued with a sweep and ardor that it is as breathtaking as it is uplifting. There is no finer pressing of this performance; indeed, these early Telefunken licensed recordings boast the very finest Soviet-era recordings with the best of German audio engineering – remarkable from first to last.
Wrote the critic S.J. in his review for the December 1989 issue of The Gramophone: “The undated Moscow recording of the Brahms Violin Concerto is to my ears even more persuasive than the 1954 version reissued by DG [with Konwitschny] last year ((D423 399-2GDO, 10/88).”
Incidentally, the lovely cover photo was taken by Erich Fischer, Hamburg. On the reverse side of the jacket are provided fine liner notes (uncredited), which are printed in both German and English.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a minor bend to the upper-right corner, as well as slight bumping to the corners in general. There is also some discoloration to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although the surfaces are not completely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really this is a very fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a lovely collector's copy.
