Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fungus is an instrumental record released by Infrasonic Sound. It is one of four solo albums completed in 2001 by Omar Rodríguez-López during the interim period following the demise of At the Drive-In and the formation of The Mars Volta. Absence was tracked at Doug Messenger's North Hollywood studio only a few weeks after Rodriguez-Lopez recorded A Manual Dexterity Soundtrack, Vol. 1 there, and is comparable to that project in both sound and atmosphere. The album features tracks that were "originally intended for use by The Mars Volta." No personnel credits are listed in the insert for either the LP or CD, though it features a photograph of Jeremy Michael Ward never seen prior to this release. It has long been rumored that this is "A Manual Dexterity Part II" and with the color insert of Jeremy's photo this could be the case.
The song "Hands Tied to the Roots of a Hemorrhage" is the foundation of what would become "Eriatarka" & "Teflon" from Octahedron is a reworking of "A Story Teeth Rotted For".

BONUS VINYL: Omar Rodriguez Lopez & Lydia Lunch EP (24 Minute Single track)
A collaboration between Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group and spoken word artist Lydia Lunch.
Rodriguez-Lopez had been a fan of Lydia's work and invited her to the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival when The Mars Volta curated it in December 2005. The meeting eventually resulted in their first recorded collaboration with the intention to record more in the future. The music was recorded in Amsterdam and New York City and Lydia's vocals were recorded at her own studio in Barcelona. Cover design is by Sonny Kay. The symbols on the two buckets on the cover are Arabic coca-cola labels.
