Description

Orchestre Super Jheevs des Paillotes de Bohicon - Ye Nan Lon An (Benin mega rare funk)
Original 7 inch afrobeat psych - compiled on African scream contest

Discafric DCF26, early 70s, Benin release, pressed in France

Here's the super rare original 7 inch pressing from the best track on the 'African scream contest'. This is one of those songs that have become really popular recently after being recompiled, and for a reason.

'Ye nan lon an' is 3 minutes of pure madness that would have won any scream contest, by this obscure group from early 1970's Benin, the west African country which at the time was still called Dahomey. Apparently it was recorded into one mic with a drum made of goat skin. The band only ever received one copy of their 7 inch, and copies are impossible to find in the wild.
One of my favorite ever African records! And if you can't afford this 7 inch, I suggest you get the compiled reissue from the German label Analog Africa.

The a-side of this 7 inch was obviously inspired by James Brown, but sounding more raw with pounding percussion that somehow walks the fine line between afrobeat and funk, haven't heard many other examples of this style other than 'Yeye moussou' by Moussa Doumbia.
B-side is more reminiscent of highlife/rumba but again with that super raw edge that the Super Jheevs came to be known for - a hypnotic groove with a sound that reminded me of a thumb piano.
