Description
Single copy of the rare Factory Records Press of Electricity presented in limited edition Black on Black Cover.
I bought this when I was about 14 years old from Rare Records, Underground Market, Market Street, Manchester around 1981 - it took me ages to pay my Mam back. Anyways the condition is fair / good. Some surface noise as expected but no creases or tears to the card. One thing to note the Thermo writing is still all present an raised to the touch but about 50% is a bluely black shade but it really isn't a big deal. Happy hunting. Electricity was one of the first songs that Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys wrote together.
There was some debate between the band and Tony Wilson (Factory supremo) over which versions of the songs to include. Wilson favoured Hannet's polished versions while Andy and Paul, not convinced by Hannet's over-lush production, wanted the original versions. A compromise was struck so that OMD's version of Electricity was included with Hannet's take on Almost on the flipside.
5,000 copies were produced in a special 'black on black' thermographed sleeve design.
The unusual graphics that feature on the sleeve were partially inspired by Andy and Paul's original musical notation style. Unable to read or write music, they adapted a series of symbols, each one representing different instruments.
Although only 5,000 singles were produced, Electricity was not a limited edition by choice. The difficult high temperature thermography procedure required by the sleeve design managed to set the printers equipment on fire several times. The printer finally despaired and called a halt to the production run at 5,000 copies.
Although the credits on the sleeve are correct, the credits on the label feature spelling errors: "Humphries and McKluskey" instead of "Humphreys and McCluskey" and "VC II Music" instead of "VCL II Music".
The run-out grooves on side one read "Before" and side two reads "After".
On 24-Apr-10 at 07:02:24 BST, seller added the following information: Note about the Thermo Text!! The sleeve has been in a PVC sleeve for the last 25 years and I pulled it out form the loft ready to sell and noticed the bluely effect. To be honest I just thought it was just one of those things, slipped it back in the case and put it on ebay. Anyways, i pulled it out again and ran my finger along the text and it wiped away - so the black is back - with no bluey tone. Cheers, Markprice rating
