Magnificent Slim Smith designed poster promoting an Ian Dury & The Blockheads gig in February 1978 at the Oxford New Theatre. Dury's first and massively critically acclaimed album, New Boots & Panties, had not long been out and this tour was helping promote it. References to the album ( see later ) abound on the poster in little codes. This really is one of the finest examples of Punk poster art ( Slim Smith designed for, amongst others, Dury's label Stiff Records, and was one of the best. ) It looks good on the scan but is even better to the naked eye. Support were rockabilly band Whirlwind ( who the month before had supported label stalwart of Dury, Elvis Costello ). As well as giving gig details, the poster has snippets of lines from the first album. Next to Ian Dury's name in tiny letter is the legend "sex & drugs &..." then Ian's name. The top lefthand corner suggests: "Ian Dury is larger than life and more fun than people". New Boots & Panties is plugged below the large image of Ian Dury where there also reads the immortal words: "could you take this man blowing in your ear-hole or pissing in your swimming pool". Poster is printed orange and black on white stock and is still very, very bright and vivid. Some very, very minor corner wear prevents the poster from being absolute mint, but it is somewhere between there and very, very near mint. Approx 58cm by 41cm. Would look stunning framed.
