Description
Original 'Essence Jamaica Ginger' Bottle

For your consideration is this extremely rare jar of Jamaica Ginger which is in like-new condition.
Jamaica Ginger extract is a well known late 19th century patent medicine that was often used to bypass prohibition laws in the United States.
Originally, it was thought to be perfectly safe to drink.
However, in the 1930's, Jamaica Ginger or 'Jake' drinkers began to lose use of their hands and feet in large numbers as paralysis set in.
With the loss of control over certain muscles, 'Jake' drinkers began to walk with a very distinctive gait.
This was known as 'Jake Leg'.
These victims received very little assistance and were often the subject of many different blues songs recorded in the early 1930's.
The jar has never been washed and the scent of Jamaica Ginger is still prevalent.
