Description
One of the most desirable early Beatles LPs, "The Beatles Vs. The Four Seasons", VeeJay DX 30, was yet another repacking of the few songs that V-J had rights to publish after the suit by Capitol Records in 1964. Here, the familiar "Introducing The Beatles" (VJLP 1062, Version II) initial album was paired into a double LP release with the addition of another LP from VJ's inventory, "Golden Hots of the Four Seasons" (VJLP 1065). As most buyers already owned most of these songs, the LP offered no new material and thus sold quite poorly. The premise was that the listener was to grade each song and see, from a tally kept on a boxing-style scorecard printed on the rear, which group won the most "rounds", song by song. Naturally the Beatles proved victorious on virtually every example we have ever seen that was fully tallied.
Fortunately, the example for auction here was NEVER marked up. Perhaps the score was kept on a separate sheet? In any event, this LP has both original, matching discs from VJ with the brackets labels and the colorband edges. The correct dead wax markings are present, too: the "AudioMatrix" stamp on the Seasons LP and the circled "MR" on the Beatles.
Unfortunately, the good news ends there. The release originally contained a fold-open poster, which is NOT included in this LP. Also, significant professional seam repair work was done to both pockets of the LP. Looking more like cracks than true full splits, now the appearance is acceptable, for the repairs were done without any tape at all and are only visible upon close inspection. But there is no way to repair the rough surface of the seams left from the damage. There is also quite a bit of corner wear and rounding, especially at the bottom of the spine, with some light flaking at the mouth edges. Surface wear and soiling is evident on the front and rear covers, but inside is very nice and clean. The white background paper has aged to a light cream color all over.
Both discs themselves are pretty well shot with wear and scratching. Even the labels present a bit of spindle scratching and the factory inner sleeves are gone, replaced with new, current blank white sleeves.
So, this is far, far from Mint. In fact we grade it as only VG-/G+ and is useful primarily as a fill in piece until a better copy can be located. However, it does display rather well and is guaranteed to be all original and legitimate. Because of the condition, we are selling this early Beatles rarity AT NO RESERVE!
