Description
On offer here is an original, silver gelatine print of two skinhead girls, taken during the Spring bank holiday in Brighton, England in 1979. It's quite an infamous image because it was later used by Morrissey as a backdrop on his 1992 tour. It was also used as the image for the tour programme's front cover, tour t-shirts and tour passes. The photographer was well known editorial portrait photographer Derek Ridgers.

This photograph would make an excellent acquisition for any Morrissey fan. No prints of this particular image have ever been sold before, and the recipient can rest assured that they will, at this point, be the only person in the world, other than Morrissey and the photographer, to own a copy.
Limited editions of Derek Ridgers portraits usually sell for many hundreds of pounds (and occasionally a good deal more than that on websites such as Britart.com). He has exhibited world-wide and extensively in this country including at the Barbican and The National Portrait Gallery, and has also had one man shows at the Institute of Contemporary Art and the Photographers Gallery.
The photograph is signed by the photographer in pencil on the back alongside a couple of his own stamps.
The condition of the print is perfect with no creases, folds, marks or discolouration. The illustration shown is a flat bed scan of the actual print being offered and it also shows the precise edges of the print. The total print size is 40.4cm by 30.6cm, the image size is 32cm x 22cm.
These prints are currently being sold here because Derek Ridgers's entire archive is being digitised, and the need to finance and make room for this process has led to a requirement to sell a lot of his original prints.
All Derek Ridgers's black and white photographs currently for sale on eBay were printed by himself, in his own darkroom on double weight, fibre based paper, and they were always archivally processed (air dried and cold flattened) to museum standards, regardless of end use. The smaller of these prints (12" by 10" or less) were almost all printed at around the time of the original session. They were either duplicates of those supplied to the magazines or record companies that commissioned them or they were simply edited out of the original selection that was supplied. I describe all these prints as vintage. Most of the larger prints were made, not necessarily at the time of the shoot, for my father's portfolio or for various exhibitions. Having said that, after '92/'93 my father seldom printed any smaller than 12"by 16" anyway, unless that size was specifically requested.
