This superb LP – a still-sealed copy* – from Columbia Masterworks (MS 6163, US pressing, gray 2eye “360 Sound” label, stereo) features Eugene Ormandy’s masterly presentation of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, recorded in the warm acoustics of the Broadwood Hotel, Philadelphia, on 24 April 1960.

Joining Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra are Janice Harsanyi (soprano), Rudolf Petrak (tenor), Harve Presnell (baritone), and the Rutgers University Choir (F. Austin Walter, Director).

*Note: The jacket was opened only to verify the label, which is the gray 2eye "360 Sound" imprint. However, the LP itself is sealed in a rounded polysleeve, so this is still a truly sealed, unplayed copy.

This recording was long a Rosette-winner a in the eminent Penguin Guide, and it is truly an incandescent performance, imbued with unforgettable fire, power, and passion.

Incidentally, the strking cover art is a collage designed by Philip Featheringill. There are outstanding liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by David Johnson, printed in English only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the still-sealed jacket is near-MINT. There is slight bumping at corners, but really that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, owners' markings, other defects and the album remains very solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, a fine collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is MINT. This is a still-sealed, pristine collector's copy.
