Description
"Blue" Gene Tyranny is the stage name for composer, keyboardist, and synthesist Robert Sheff who has been on faculty of Mill College. Here he penned and recorded four songs, one almost half an hour, in various styles although they share a sound scape, or something. There is a funky instrumental with demanding reed (and double reed) charts over synths and the usual electric band rhythm section. One track has two female sopranos singing over rich, rippling synths. One track has again carefully written reed charts, electric guitars and bass, and drums, while synths swirl and provide cohesive underpinnings. The long track is episodic, with several choruses of spoken lyrics as of one or more letters home from an insightful and literate traveler. The group here include Barbara Higbie on fiddle as well as Peter Gordon who plays lots of reeds all through. The long track also features outdoor recordings to make the travel more fun and more believable. Not for everyone, but distinct, unique.
