This handsome gatefold LP – a superb collector’s copy – from Telarc (DG-10060, German pressing, red/black label, DDD Soundstream recording) features conductor Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s blazing account of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor Op. 67 and the Overture to Egmont Op. 84, both brilliantly recorded at Symphony Hall, Boston, on 24 and 26 January 1981 (producer: Robert Woods / engineer: Jack Renner).
It is a lasting pity that Telarc was not able, or chose not, to embark on a complete Beethoven Symphony cycle with Ozawa, rather than with Dohnanyi, whose Cleveland cycle, though not without merits, never quite scaled the summits of these works. Still, we have this memorable Beethoven Fifth, among the best things to come out of Ozawa’s long tenure with the BSO.

During the recording of the digital masters and the subsequent transfer to disc, the entire audio chain was transformerless. The signal was not passed through any processing device (i.e., compression, limiting, or equalization) at any step during production.
Sampling frequency conversion of Telarc's Soundstream digital master to the Compact Disc format was accomplished with the Studer SFC-16 sampling frequency converter. The digital information was not subject to any analog intersteps, thus preserving the integrity of the original digital master.”
Incidentally, the striking cover photo of Ozawa was taken by Peter Schaaf, the art direction supervised by Ray Kirschensteiner.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the laminated gatefold jacket is near-MINT. There are slight wear at corners, but that is all. Otherwise, the album appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very attractive – overall, this is a very fine collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really this is a very fine copy and playback is truly superb. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a very fine collector's copy.
