KILLER two-sider from 1966 by the Palace Guard, "Greed" b/w "Calliope" on the Parkway label - simply one of the finest two-siders I've ever heard! "Greed" has been comped on Fuzz Flakes and Shakes 1, and is a GREAT eastern sounding punk psych track reminiscent of a more garaged-out Kaleidoscope or Orient Express. Killer mad Turkish dance rhythm section, winding snakey sitar-like guitar leads, giant cymbal crashes and a totally drugged-out hookah pipe mystical Indian aura to the whole thing. Imagine the Music Machine crossed with the Churchills and you've got an idea what's going on here. The flip, meanwhile, "Calliope", is another FANTASTIC song and as of yet, totally undiscovered and uncomped, as far as I can tell. As the title suggests, this is a wild psychedelic ride on a mad Alice in Wonderland carousel, with off-key calliope rhythm, odd sound effects and a bouncy somewhat twisted Looking Glass melody. TWO monumental tracks on this, the band's final single, and yes, the great Emitt Rhodes was in this band too. Original pressing on the Parkway label from 1966, stock sleeve.
