PANAMA LIMITED JUG BAND - self titled

Rare and highly sought after 1969 UK very 1st pressing of this blues/rock/baroque classic on the coveted HARVEST label, STEREO SHVL 753

The appearance of the vinyl is truly excellent. Each side has retained virtually all of it's original sheen and in normal daylight gleam. Under a bright light, and when held at the right angle, it is possible to identify some mild, wispy spider lines and the occasional small and very light surface scuff but all of these are strictly surface only, non-feelable, and do not adversely affect the similarly excellent audio quality. The exception to this are two very small scratches on track 4, side 2 (Sundown") resulting in a total of 29 mild (but audible) clicks at various intervals throughout this track (and this track only).

Each label (with no "EMI" box, signifying a very first pressing) is excellent+. All writing remains perfectly defined, as does the surface texturing and colouring. I can just about make out a couple of tiny spindle trails on each label but apart from that, perfect!

The iconic Ernest J. Day laminated gatefold sleeve is excellent. The top and bottom edges remain well defined with no rubbing as do the corners with just minimal scuffing. There is an area of some very minimal laminate creasing towards the bottom right hand corner, and the spine has a little creasing (which I have tried to show in my photos) one of which impinges upon the letter "e" in "Limited". There is no fraying on the opening edges and both the inside and reverse side of the gatefold are truly excellent.

Finally, the quality of the audio is an overall excellent. I did detect some very mild background crackle at the beginning of each side and intermittently during a couple of the quieter moments elsewhere - nothing really, and as already mentioned above there is some mild (but audible) clicking - but no skipping - on track 4, side 2. But apart from that the tone of each track is excellent, with no distortion whatsoever and great clarity throughout. Each track makes for a great listen.

Comes in the original and classic EMI poly-lined inner (a sought after item in it's own right!) with photos and titles of many of the great Harvest releases of the era;

-  no tears or splits and still fully functional, with just a little age discolouration around the edges. Excellent.

In summary, an overall impressive (and truly excellent) scarce very first pressing of this 1969 cult classic.

On the subject of postage, I take great care in the packaging of all items, using a proper vinyl cardboard mailer along with at least two cardboard stiffeners. I take great care in removing the record from the outer sleeve in order to prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Descriptions of any records I sell comply with the Rare Record Price Guide grading guidelines :

Mint

Description: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

Description: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packag­ing might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good

Description: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable sur­face marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

Description: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

Fair 

Description: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for prop­erly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

Poor

Description: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

Description: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
