Parliament – Osmium
Released in 1970, Osmium is the debut album by Parliament, showcasing an early and raw version of the funk collective that would later become a powerhouse in the genre. This album differs from the later, more refined Parliament-Funkadelic sound by blending elements of psychedelic rock, gospel, soul, and early funk with a rougher, more experimental edge. It also features surreal and at times humorous lyrics, a trait that would define George Clinton’s later work.
Despite its relative obscurity compared to later Parliament releases, Osmium is a fascinating glimpse into the band’s formative years, with tracks that foreshadow the signature P-Funk sound. The album includes heavy guitar work, blues-infused grooves, and gospel harmonies, making it a unique entry in the band's catalog.
