A strange sadness hangs over Grievous Angel given that Gram Parsons was already gone before the record even came out, having died at 26 from a drug and alcohol overdose. But the music itself never feels weighed down by that - quite the opposite, in fact. 'Return Of The Grievous Angel', 'Brass Buttons' and the beautiful 'Love Hurts' have an easy, lived-in quality, with Emmylou Harris adding those perfectly matched harmonies and James Burton bringing some exquisite guitar work. This is cosmic American music at its most tender and balancing country, rock and folk with grace. This reissue of the 1974 original has been cut from the original analogue masters so the warmth and space of the recordings really come through. A classic for good reason.
