Patti Smith's debut album arrived in November 1975 and immediately reordered what rock music could be.
Produced by John Cale, Horses fused punk energy with spoken word, beat poetry, and raw electric rock into something that had no real precedent.
The Patti Smith Group — Lenny Kaye on lead guitar, Richard Sohl on piano, Ivan Kral on guitar and bass, and Jay Dee Daugherty on drums — play with a loose, charged intensity that matches Smith's fearless vocal performances.
Side one opens with "Gloria," Smith's rewrite of the Van Morrison classic, which she hijacks with one of the most arresting opening lines in rock history. "Birdland" runs nine minutes and remains one of the most extraordinary pieces of music from the entire decade.
Side two carries "Break It Up" — co-written with Tom Verlaine of Television — and the epic suite "Land," which weaves together original material and a reinvention of "Land of a Thousand Dances." Recorded and mixed at Electric Lady Studios, New York City.
Original US first pressing on Arista Records, AL 4066, 1975. Light blue label with gold Arista triangle logo, black text. "PRODUCED BY JOHN CALE" on both label faces.
Mastered at Sterling Sound by Robert Ludwig — his RL signature is hand-etched in the deadwax on both sides. Ludwig's cutting work at Sterling in the mid-1970s is among the most respected in the collector market. This is the cut serious listeners seek out.
Both lacquers carry a RE designation — a recut within the original 1975 pressing run. Pressed by Peter Pan Industries.
The personal inscriptions cut into the lacquer at the mastering session are present on both sides: "MOM + DAD" on Side 1, "Daddy Frank / Linda + Todd" on Side 2 — permanent details from the Sterling Sound session, present on every record stamped from these lacquers.
