Patto : Patto 1Y2 / 2Y3 1st Press Vertigo 1970

This very collectable first pressing plays with great quality for the vast majority.  I have only graded the opening section on the first track track as VG+ the rest of the album is either Ex+ or Near Mint or better!  Overall the clarity, depth and power of the audio is very impressive and like I say there is only minimal intrusion.

The textured cover is in excellent shape with just one very small 'clean' tear on the back cover.  It has retained much of its bright colouring with only a little of the usual fading around the edges.  The original Vertigo inner is also in excellent condition.

This first pressing has a 1Y2/2Y3 matrix and the final track is credited incorrectly as 'Patton' on the inside cover.

Visual description

The vinyl still has a strong glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  Under a bright light there are some faint hairlines with just 2 / 3 that are a little more obvious.  There is also a small section of 'mottling' on the edge of each side but it is faint and has no obvious affect on the audio.  The iconic Vertigo labels are unmarked and do not have too much spindle wear.

Play grading

The bass intro on 'The Man' is very clean apart from a couple of static tick / click sounds and the first few seconds of the opening vocal is similar.  It isn't loud and really isn't that intrusive.  As it continues the clarity is very impressive - there is no persistent static just the odd static tick here and there.  The more you progress the better it gets!  There is barely any background and then the mid instrumental plays very clearly with just a bit more static at the beginning but again this is not loud.  The vast majority of this section plays with great clarity and the next vocal is more or less perfect with only one very light tick.  The more powerful end section is stunning with no interference so overall I will grade the opening section as VG+ and the rest as Ex+ although many sections are stronger than that especially the end section.

'Hold Me Back' just has one barely audible static on the intro and then the opening vocal section plays to perfection.  From then on it plays with tremendous power and depth and with no intrusion on the audio.  A couple of minor statics during the mid instrumental but really you cannot the fault the audio here.  The playback is so strong and powerful and Halsall's work especially during the instrumental is superb.  There is no interference here and Near Mint is deserved at the very least.

The acoustic intro on 'Time To Die' plays beautifully and Patto's first vocal is equal to that.  The first up tempo section is faultless and from then on it plays with great clarity and depth and no intrusion on the audio.  No ticks, clicks or pops and Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio.

The intro on 'Red Glow' is perfect and Patto's opening vocal is so close to that with perhaps just a touch of minimal distortion right at the start.  A couple of seconds at most.  The following instrumental featuring superb guitar work from Halsall again plays with phenomenal clarity and power and it continues in the same precise way.  The playback is so strong and deep and the audio definition is so impressive for a final track.  There is no inner groove distortion, aside from that couple of seconds near the beginning and the closing instrumental could not play any better.  Mint- is very much deserved.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The intro on 'San Antone' has no intrusion and the opening vocal section has only a couple of light statics that you could easily miss.  The mid instrumental plays with great quality there is nothing that detracts from the audio.  Once again the entire track plays with real power and depth and there is no distortion.  A couple of static ticks at the end of the fade and Near Mint- is about right.

'Government Man' has only a couple of mega quiet statics on the intro and the first vocal is just as strong.  The first chorus is superb and it continues to play with sublime audio - the quiet end section plays with great clarity.  A Near Mint version.

The quiet bass intro on 'Money Bag' plays very clearly with only a handful of minor statics.  As the volume picks up the audio is stunning and it progresses in the same way.  Certainly more of a jazz rock 'feel' here and the clarity cannot be faulted.  No ticks, clicks, pops or static this entire instrumental section is fantastic!  Featuring more complicated work from Halsall the sonic quality is stunning.  The bass sound is also very strong and deep and plays as good as new.  When it finally arrives after 6 minutes the vocal plays very clearly with only a couple of very quiet ticks and static / clicky type sounds towards the end.  The end instrumental has no intrusion - I will grade the vocal section Ex+ and Near Mint for the remainder.

The intro / opening vocal 'Sittin' Back Easy' plays with stunning precision, a couple of mega light statics only, and the first 'progressive' section is flawless.  The following high octane vocal has is equal to that and the next quieter section has barely any static.  From then on it plays with superb power and depth and with no distortion on the top end.  The end section is so strong and has only some static right at the end of the fade out.  A Near Mint version.

In summary this first pressing plays to a very high standard with only a little interference.  The vast majority does play with great quality and whilst there is a little background there are certainly no clicks or pops.  I believe my audio grading above sums it up well.  Overall the clarity, depth and power of the audio is very impressive.

The Gatefold & Swirl Inner

The fully textured cover is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear the most obvious of which is one small tear on the back cover by the opening edge.  However, it is a 'clean' tear and not likely to expand at any moment!  The top and bottom edges have only minimal rubbing and the wide spine is in superb order with only light wear on the corners.  The right hand corners are very clean with just a little rubbing bottom right.  The opening edge has hardly any handling wear and the front cover is very clean and vibrant with only some of the usual spotting around the edges - not very much and it is a very common feature for this textured cover.  The back cover is very similar with perhaps just a little more spotting / marking on the bottom half.  The inside of the gatefold is in beautiful condition with no wear at all.  A strong example overall.

The original Vertigo swirl inner (dated 1070) is very clean with very little age related fading around the edges and has just one tiny side split.  Minimal creasing also.  The original poly-ling was missing so I have put another one in.

Postage & Packaging

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
