Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with moderate to moderate+ spindle marks, more than I usually like to offer but this record is still very clean and the playing has been made carefully and sound quality is still very high. I feel confident this record has been played less than the spindle marks would indicate as many used the labels as guide to locate the spindle.

Cat Number: 6360016.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 136 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: The first of two Patto albums on this most collectable progressive label and only slightly easier to find than the second (although the price guides seem to think a little differently). Regarded as a classic by fans but both the Vertigo albums sold poorly and they were duly dropped by the label. Patto play a jazz-tinged rock but used no brass or winds, simply guitars and rhythm. The album has a slightly muted production and benefits from volume. A typically wonderful Spiral cover, this gatefold format is very colourful and has deeply textured surfaces - although most of the acts on his label has little commercial potential, no expense was spared in the design of the covers and this is another gem. This one has a little wear and some mild discolouration and the record labels suggest a fair number of plays but both record and cover look nice and the sound from the record is still high with little unwanted. Never easy to find, this very near EX copy will please many collectors needing to fill another gap in their swirl collection but will be slightly below purist or connoisseur standard but the majority of collectors will enjoy having it I feel sure.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+.

Cover Grade and Format: Very close EX, an unlaminated gatefold format with heavily textured surfaces on all faces. Printed and made in England by Howards.

Cover Front: The odd slight rub trace near the spine and a couple of ultra fine hairline creases on the same edge. These tiny blemishes apart there is little else to fault except some very mild discolouration to the vivid yellow surface. This is being somewhat critical also, yellow actually shows up grubbiness more than white - yes true - but this has only very light traces and the front looks fantastic. The raised surfaces retain all their ink bar the small aforementioned rub and this will be difficult to find a great deal better.

Cover Back: The back is pretty much the same but just a trace of rubbing on the spine fold. This has the VO price code inside a box on the bottom right corner area, this is totally unrubbed and any marks on the surface are tiny, light and few. There is no ringwear which is always a great bonus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both faces are near immaculate, clean, fresh with any rub traces being small and very light - highly attractive indeed.

Top Edges: Moderate(-) rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Moderate rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this back edge. The front is sealed

Spine and Text: The spine has light+ patchy rubbing but remains solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. The text has survived largely unscathed and is fully present.

Corners: All the corners have rubbed but not excessively so, they still retain very decent shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A strong all round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Only downgraded because of the edge rubs, without them I would have graded EX+ at least. This still attractive item should please many collectors if not the spiral connoisseur.

The Inner: Around EX again, the original owner wrote the band name and title (same) on one side as can be seen in my complete picture. At least it proves authenticity, the date code is ‘1070’. Overall clean with few creases and the lining still intact. The window is very neat and undamaged. Some mild ageing and gum darkening around the seams which remain unsplit.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX or very, very close too, with no more than very fine surface marks under light. A copy played a fair number of times but far from excessive, these playing surfaces are very clean and devoid of any heavy or even moderate marks and no scratches. Numerous tiny surface traces and hairlines that catch angled light that have no sound at all. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A visually attractive record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare Spiral record plays up to its high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a solid dynamic range but with a slightly muted production that I mentioned above. Any surface sounds are minimal but mild traces were noted on the final shorter song, nothing major and given the vintage of this record and popularity for the few who actually bought it, only minor. I noted no significant pops or clicks and pressing quality of generally high. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Little, indeed anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this elusive record. This copy will prove quite difficult to find significantly better and can be very warmly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
