While much of uptight English Canada and the USA were battling cinematic censor boards, the French-speaking province of Quebec was enjoying a period of relative sexual openness near the end of the 60’s. Starting with Valerie in 1968 (essentially the province's first nudie film), the era right around the turn of the 70’s saw a fabulous run of b-movie sexploitation flicks (aka, Maple Syrup Porn) that were released only in Quebec. While the actual films have long since faded into oblivion, several the accompanying vinyl soundtracks have developed a strong cult following over the years.
Arguably one of Quebec's greatest composers-arrangers-musicians, Paul Baillargeon is well known for his work with Jean-Pierre Ferland (most notably his lush arrangements on 1971's “Soleil”), for several of his brilliant and cutting-edge film & theatrical soundtracks, and also for having composed the music for the "Star Trek...Next Generation" series. But his two most coveted recordings are no doubt his sexploitation soundtracks "Viens Mon Amour" (aka "Love In a 4 Letter World") and "Y'a Plus de Trou à Percé" (aka "Loving and Laughing") both released on the tiny GAP label (which issued just a few singles and three soundtracks in its brief existence).
On his second release “Y’a Plus De Trou A Percé” , Baillargeon sticks mostly to soft jazzy popsike that, for all its obvious cheescake, still sounds interesting after all these years. Great tracks featuring the funky Patsy Gallant & Sharon Lee Williams as well as Quebec folk-psych duo La Coeur D'une Generation.
* This LP was also released in it's near-identical English version "Loving and Laughing" (lead-in & lead-out tracks by Sharon Lee Williams instead of Patsy Gallant)
