The Ramble (stomp)

Don’t let the name fool you – this wasn’t some lounge-bound dance band playing sleepy tunes. Although they didn’t get their fair share of studio time (only playing a handful of recording dates) Paul Howard’s band was a tight one with several musical notables among their cast. Their only recording sessions were in 1929-’30 and on those sessions you’ll hear Lawrence Brown (soon to join Duke Ellington), and Lionel Hampton on drums (soon to join Benny Goodman).

In fact, it’s Hampton who’s doing the scat vocal on the song “Moonlight Blues.” Charlie Lawrence did the arrangements for the group who also plays lead sax. Oh, and don’t miss out on George Orendorff on trumpet – a great sound from him too.

Here’s an original Victor Electric Orthophonic pressing – that’s even got the very short-lived Victor Talking Machine arc at the scroll’s bottom! They only did that one for about six months.
