Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Side two with its more revealing white surfaces show no toning, grubbiness or handling marks. Both are close to exceptional for this elusive record.

Brief Info: The former Manfred Mann vocalist of their pop hits era of the 1960s. After initial success as a solo act, his career somewhat declined. By the time of this one-off album on the Vertigo Swirl label, few even noticed and it was another doomed to meagre sales and even bargin bins. This is a real shame as this album is an impressive overlooked gem. At times he even sounds like Bowie, a very talented singer and artist that should have faired better. An understated piece and only known at the time by the few who bothered who would have discovered what a fine and quality singer this man is. Clearly another collectable and elusive Swirl and one I have never found easy to find – this being only my second ever. A very copy as well, as usual, the cover is prone to all forms of wear, this has little. The record appears little played and offers lovely clean sound throughout. So a great chance to fill another gap in your Spiral collection.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, uncredited. Includes the later black style Swirl inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Another really challenging cover: this one has survived the years well overall. A little, gentle rubbing here-and-there with a few equally light and mostly fine surface marks mostly seen under light. A tiny sticker mark trace only just registers, this on a non-text or important graphic area around an inch below the ‘N’ in ‘JONES’, and look hard to even see it. The lack of creasing and fading is great news. The most rubbing is seen on the bottom left corner which should speak volumes for the rest. Given just how uncompromising this cover is, this front is impressive (as is the rest).

Cover Back: The back, against the odds, is even better. Even less still rubbing with any hint of rim rubbing minimal and faint. I can be sure most of these will have ringwear and significant rubbing which this one has managed to avoid. A trace of fine creasing near the bottom right corner, but hardly even showing. When opened up fully to reveal the whole profile of the singer, this looks very impressive indeed as my picture shows.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb with hardly anything of note to fault.

Top Edges: Both straight, very neat, flush with any rub traces mostly tiny and light.

Bottom Edges: Quite light and patchy rubbing. For unprotected storage edges, these are quite impressive.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge that is straight and unworn. The back opening edges are clean, mostly very sharp with minimal traces of wear. Any thickening or burring bordering on minuscule even as seen viewed end-on. These are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced., indeed these were not trimmed flush in manufacture to reitterate the fact.

Spine and Text: An impressive spine as well, the only rubbing of any real note, on the bottom tip area. Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. No text matter was printed on this one. The lack of wear to the surface and both the fold hinges being absolutely super news for collectors. Any would have ruined the singers face when fully opened. It will hardly get better for discerning cover collectors in this respect, when opened, the graphic flows around perfectly with minimal traces of white areas (the bottom tip apart) as seen again in my picture.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs which will prove immensely difficult to avoid. All retain very fine shape with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This generally impressive and elusive Spiral cover should please many, and possibly most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: gently aged with the usual seam adhesive area discolouration. This issue from the era using the new black style inners (actually a negative of the more familiar Swirl inners). It has two neat untorn window circles and the polylining still quite clear. A little mild creasing near one lower corner and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. This will prove immensely difficult to find better and visually a fantastic record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This sadly neglected album plays up to, and most-all even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure – but was this one even repressed? Like several other titles on this label, this was probably only briefly available before deletion. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully, and little handled. I doubt if this copy has seen light-of-day for decades. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive album. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
