RARE MONO US first pressing of Paul Jones` film soundtrack, "Sings Songs From The Film 'Privilege' And Others" on Capitol Records (June 1967).
The Paul Jones/Mike Leander soundtrack to filmmaker Peter Watkins` anti-establishment movie "Privilege" is famous for two reasons. It was none other than Patti Smith, punk queen of 70s counter-culture who rekindled interest in Paul Jones` searing teen-psych anthem "Free Me", when she re-recorded it as "Privilege (Set Me Free)" for her religiously-inspired "Easter" album (June 1978). "Privilege" was also the very first counter-cultural movie statement to feature a fully-fledged rock star as lead actor. And no, we`re not talking "Help!" or "A Hard Day`s Night" here, either: "Privilege" was considered so controversial at the time that it was banned from British movie theatres almost immediately following its release...only to languish in film-historical obscurity for over 40 years. In 2008, "Privilege" was finally released on DVD by the British Film Institute.
Needless to say, there was good reason to do so: The film is a daunting piece of work: Artistically striking, witty and scary, with remarkably capable acting by Paul Jones (him of Manfred Mann fame) and co-star, fashion model Jean Shrimpton. With the instrumentalisation of art and artists for political gain, as well as social manipulation as its main theme, "Privilege" has proven astoundingly prescient; with mind-controlled puppets such as Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Beyoncé and their dubious ilk kneading young minds and influencing the behaviour patterns of the Facebook and Twitter generation...
GRADING:
MINT- COVER in near-perfect condition. Please see photos for details.
- Sleeve still in its original shrink, undamaged except for a tiny missing piece (rear sleeve, at upper right).
- Two tiny pin-prick size holes, from staple removal (at top left).
- Also includes the original, custom printed Capitol Records inner sleeve in MINT- condition, perfect except for a seam split.
MINT(-) RECORD with no visible signs of previous play at all: Perfect!
- Original MONO version, bought sealed and played only once or twice in over thirty years.
- Perfect vinyl on both sides, with impeccable audio reproduction.
- Original first-pressing Capitol Records "rainbow" labels with no spindle wear whatsoever.
- The matrix stamps in the run-off grooves read "T-1-2795-F-3" and "T-2-2795-F-3", respectively.
- This record is fully certified to be a very first US pressing, released in June 1967.
PLEASE NOTE: Not to be compared with the more-often-than-not substandard vinyl on offer on eBay, this item is in honestly-graded MINT(-) condition: You will not find another copy of "Sings Songs From The Film 'Privilege' And Others" as nice as this one - especially at this bargain price. "True value for money" is the motto here!
