THIS ITEM COMES FROM THE INCREDIBLE, SINGLE-OWNER COLLECTION WE ACQUIRED A WHILE AGO, IN WHICH ITEMS ORIGINALLY BOUGHT BY THE OWNER FROM THE MID-1970s to THE MID-2010s WERE KEPT STILL SEALED IN A NEAR-LABORATORY, TIME-CAPSULE CONDITIONS AND IN PRACTICALLY CLIMATE- AND HUMIDITY- CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT.  CONDITIONS OF SOME OF THESE ITEMS RANGE FROM IMPECCABLE TO TRULY UNBELIEVABLE. SOME OF THESE BEAUTIFUL MUSEUM PIECES LOOKED SO PERFECT THAT WE HAD TO REINSPECT AND RE-EXAMINE THEM A FEW TIMES TO MAKE SURE THEY OUR EYES ARE NOT DECEIVING US.

Wings Over America is Paul McCartney's best live album. It is vast and burdening, and Wings was never the best live rock band, yet the tracks all contain a good dose of fun. Paul was never self-serious, and it shows here.

There are some excellent renditions of Beatles tracks: The Long and Winding Road, Yesterday, Blackbird, and I've Just Seen A Face. However, the rendition of Lady Madonna is terrible. The rest of the songs are all post-Beatles. So immediately, this album will be a huge turn off for Beatles fans who aren't extremely well acquainted with Paul's 70s output.

The majority of the songs are Wings-era, most are done well, the only failure in my opinion is the awful version of You Gave Me The Answer, which was probably one of the weaker tracks on Venus and Mars. It is too bad Paul didn't play more of Band On The Run-era songs, only playing 3 from that album. The rest of the songs, especially the more rocking ones, are really enjoyable. In some cases the live atmosphere actually improves on the studio versions: "Time To Hide" cranks up the tempo and it makes a world of a difference, Denny's harmonica is a great touch. Denny Laine's presence on the album is probably the most enjoyable aspect of it. He really shines on his Moody Blues single "Go Now", Simon & Garfunkel's "Richard Cory", and "Picasso's Last Word" - which is much better than the odd version on Band On The Run. Also, listening to Paul's backing vocals is a real treat, a stark reminder of how important Paul's voice was to the sound of the Beatles. I single out "Spirits of Ancient Egypt" as a clear demonstration of Paul's excellent backing vocals, but all the tracks with Denny singing are great because of this.

Another highlight throughout the album is Paul's bass playing. His playing on Silly Love Songs, Listen To What The Man Said, Letting Go, Band On The Run, and Time To Hide is fantastic, essentially driving the songs. Paul's playing is top notch and this album showcases why many see him as one of the best bass players around.

Overall, Wings Over America a great buy, with 28 songs, most of them are really quite good. It isn't the best live album, but in my opinion it is a better overall album than Venus & Mars and definitely superior to Wings At The Speed Of Sound (basically all the good songs on that album are present, and are better). Oh and the acoustic rendition of Bluebird is amazing.

This wonderful collection of Beatles' and Wings' hits and songs performed live was culled from the Wings' phenomenally successful 1976 American tour. The vinyl version of this triple album - surprisingly hard to find in this condition (when was the last time you saw a still sealed original?) - has been out of print for years and is a chockfull of vintage McCartney. Not to be missed.
