I will never compromise on quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. Label/Format: Decca, unboxed format with matt surfaces with a faint hint of texturing. This has the distinctive early Decca deep ring ridge as can be seen.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only quite light/very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This rare mono record plays superbly with just three clicks heard on the entire album – one moderate, then light, then very light. This vintage original soundtrack album will rarely be seen or heard much better.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine even on budget turntables.

Rarity & Info: Quite rare, even with the biggest name in popular music credited as the writer of this music, it went little noticed and sales were low. Like many soundtracks without major hit singles or significantly commercial, they were quickly deleted and not even repressed, this a case-in-point. Indeed this is probably the rarest Paul McCartney written album and is seldom seen or offered, and mono copies in particular are rarely found in anything like top condition. Like the majority from the collection this came from, it appears hardly played and offers fantastic clean sound with just three brief, mostly gentle clicks the only blemish. No distortion or unwanted sounds apart from what is at times a very quiet album. Although the album is banded and the music reasonably varied, it has no song titles, that is something very unusual indeed for any album.

Brief Info: ‘The Family Way’ was a 1967 British comedy drama film starring Hayley Mills, Hywel Bennett, John Mills amongst several other well-known actors. It received critical acclaim for the time and proved successful. However, the soundtrack went largely unnoticed, even though the music was composed by Paul McCartney – still at the time a member of The Beatles. Soundtrack albums come and go quickly, and this one did not sell in any great numbers making it one of the most elusive McCartney credited albums of them all. The music is enjoyable, even catchy at times and not all is orchestrated. But hardly commercial either. A rarity for Beatles and related collectors and this a very impressive, very clean, little used mono original. I say ‘original’, but this was not repressed and deleted quickly, I am certain deleted pretty much after the first run, I have never seen a boxed or any other version of this. A rare opportunity for fans and collectors of the great man’s work – one (possibly) even many still do not even knows exist?

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This covers all folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. The main rear panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker Ltd, includes the Patent Applied for Decca inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Overall, the cover has only modestly and light aged, but has no damage or serious issues – overall both sides remain attractive. The laminate retains fine shine and clarity and has avoided lifting with minimal creasing, any present very small, fine and faint, that always good news on these very thin card early Decca sleeves. Only gentle dulling around the thick record’s rim area seen under light, few can hope to have less and overall this front remains very impressive.

Cover Back: The unprotected back has aged a little more with only gentle light mild toning mainly near the edge areas and laminate end. The card modestly darkened to politely remind of age, but the lack of rubbing, creasing, ring wear and writing are all major pluses on such covers. I feel this has far to praise rather than fault, I doubt too many will be found much better these days.

Top Edge: Very thin, still quite straight and flat with barely any wear bar a couple of tiny laminate chips.

Bottom Edge: Even better with little to fault at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Any thickening modestly light, the odd slight burr trace on the back – Decca covers from this era were made with very thin card – hence fragile, these have fared well. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Again very thin, but reasonably straight and solid with patchy compression, the ends are pinched in manufacture. The text is unworn under the solid and unpeeled clear laminate that has only a couple of very fine surface crack traces, both barely even feelable.

Corners: Any tip rubs or creasing tiny and light with very fine to near excellent shape retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this quite fragile and rare 1960’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better as these seldom surface for sale. This still attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the Decca polylined inner includes the ‘Patent Applied for’ text and has only quite lightly aged with the usual darkening of the seam area adhesive and odd small tone spot here-and-there. Both window circles crisp and untorn, the lining attached and still clear. Minimal creasing to the paper and all edges naturally intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed on quality Decca vinyl. A copy with very light plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, mostly fine and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches bar the microscopic one that causes three brief clicks, as stated above – one moderate, one light, they one very light indeed, and little else on what is quite a challenging album with some quiet passages. Viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Any slight dulling from being stored in the polylined inner for decades minimal seen mostly on the run-out area of side one, totally harmless and almost as light as it ever gets. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare, bordering on obscure Paul McCartney written album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault bar those three brief clicks mentioned above. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and mainly carefully handled. Nothing bar those three brief clicks – two of which are only very light – spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. Absolute perfection any mono record this considerable is a massive ask and few will ever really deliver it, especially on this type of album. This will prove very difficult to find better and merits strong recommendation. McCarney’s rarest? – most probably.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
