LOVES ME LIKE A ROCK
Now here’s something that doesn’t turn up so often. This is a record company insider’s advance sneek of the new Paul Simon single “Loves Me Like A Rock” from May of 1973. This is a one-sided acetate, cut at 45rpm, into a ten inch lacquer.
The really curious thing is that the label as this master marked as ZSP 158499 while the actual release was one number later ZSP 158500.
Is this the same as the release version? Sounds like it to me, but perhaps you know something subtle I’m missing, or it got the wrong number written on it when it was cut.
What is an acetate? Unlike a normal record pressed on vinyl, shellac or styrene, this is a record that is actually CUT on a RECORD LATHE one-at-a-time. The uses for an acetate are these: 1) to let an artist/producer/executive hear a new song BEFORE it is made into a record for final approval. 2) To send out to the song publisher to register the material 3) To send out as a super-advance to a few movers and shakers who will potentially make this a hit and 4) as a vital step in the record manufacturing and plate making process.
Since acetates are cut one-at-a-time, they were quite expensive. Even in the '70s they would cost around $25 each so they would keep the orders at a minimum, usually less than ten would be run up.
CONDITION: VG++ with only a hint of on-air use. One sided lacquer.
