POSSIBLY THE greatest American progressive rock band of the seventies; certainly the toast of the prog rock cognescenti and deservedly so. Pavlov's Dog represent the beginning and end of an era for music that courted no commercial success whatsoever despite producing music that was as natural and impactful as the very best of them. This is the band's debut album introducing a sound like no other. Vocalist David Surkamp was a trained opera singer starting at the sort of pitch where Geddy Lee left off. Guitarists Doug Rayburn and Steve Scorfina provided cutting edge riffs, twists and turns whilst Mike Safron sits on his drum throne metering out precise and potent rhythm. The songs are delightfully airie and artful, full of space and complexity in the same breath yet deep in emotion and penance. Make no mistake, though, it's Surkamp's show. His voice and lyrics taking a peculiar path to a world of hobbits and pixies the sort of mood that could form the soundtrack to a new world order had he been given a big enough platform to preach from.
Killer cuts include all of side one: 'Julia', a wonderfully evocative introduction, 'Late November' boasting a suitably faerie dust arrangement, the cut and thrust of 'Song Dance' featuring a brilliant riff (Blue Oyster Cult meets Black Sabbath) and Surkamp's most explosive vocal and finishing with the double trouble end run of 'Fast Gun' and 'Natchez Trace', a mighty coupling that is pretty much about as good as it gets for song orientated progressive rock.
Side two slows the pace down a tad but the intrigue and brilliance is not for one moment suffocated by a lack of creativity. 'Theme From Subway Sue', 'Preludin' composed by the wonderfully monickered violinist Siegfried Carver, and finally 'Of Once And Future Kings' a suitably titled magnm opus of crushing prog of the finest order.
This is the rare withdrawn 1st issue of this album on ABC records before being re-issued on Columbia. Its an interesting story - apparently the band was 'swopped' with country rockers Poco between the two labels - Poco moved from Columbia to ABC whilst Pavlov's Dog from ABC to Columbia in a bizarre transfer move. Natch, this version on ABC is extremely hard to find as it only came out for five minutes before being withdrawn almost immediately and pulped.
