Description
Peace, Bread and Land Band: Liberation Music 10" (US, Liberation Music/Red Yogis, 1970). This is a very rare, original hippie acid folk artifact, recorded near Seattle in 1970 by Sid and Elaine Brown (Sid was a founding member of the legendary Michigan folk-rock group, the Spike-Drivers), and released as a private edition release at the time, in a 10" x 13" envelope, which was crudely screen printed (see scans). This auction is for the original 10" record and the original sleeve. It's a six song mini-LP, recorded in mono, and is excellent protest folk with a great communal message and feeling. This material was recently reissued by the RD label on LP with additional recordings from other eras of the group, but not with this original artwork. This 10" was given a four star rarity rating in the 3001 Collector Dreams book by Hans Pokora. The songs are: "The Wheel Of The Law" (lyrics by Ho Chi Minh, music by PB&LB), "Take It Away", "Women's Song", "Angela" (for Angela Davis), "Playing In The Water", and "The End Of Silence". The vinyl is in nice shape, VG+ to VG++, some very fine scuffing is visible in bright incandescent light (not ambient room lighting), it doesn't seem to have been played much, and plays nicely with some light background crackle and the occasional pop/tick - sound is clear and strong. The labels are clean with only one small spindle mark on each side. The original 10" x 13" envelope sleeve is here! It was printed with the opening flap of the envelope at the bottom, and that flap shows some tears and some creasing, as one would expect. This area does not contain any major portion of the artwork, though, and could be trimmed away if desired. The artwork itself is uncompromised, there is a tiny name rubber stamped on the front which is hard to see, and some small tears near the top of the image (the bottom of the envelope). The cut and paste imagery on the sleeve is quite amusing, with a picture of Bill Graham with dollar signs around his head, left wing icons Ho Chi Minh and Angela Davis, and the title "Red Yogis" underneath what looks to be an image of the Viet Cong (Red Yogis is listed as the label in some discographies, but I'm not certain about that). A naive but charming piece of hippie ideology, and the music is excellent! I'll grade the sleeve VG and the vinyl VG+, but I think many would grade it higher - I try to be conservative. A nice item, rarely offered, no reserve! Some discographies list an insert as originally issued with this item, but this does not come with one.
