Rarity: Quite rare on vinyl. Most sales of this album were on CD. This copy practically mint throughout and hardly even played. This is seldom seen or offered as a complete vinyl copy, especially like this.

Brief Info: The fourth Pearl Jam album, again varied and even experimental with a more polished production. Issued to largely positive reviews and still selling well, but mostly on the digital formats. I have always been a fan of this band, and I rate this one highly, I like bands to experiment with different styles, and this one is a captivating listen. Like the previous album ‘Vitology’ (also on offer), this is superbly packaged, in this case lavish IS the word. All parts explained further down. An album rarely seen or offered on vinyl, this is genuinely scarce, especially in this superb complete condition. The record appears hardly even played and sounds fantastic.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): a tiny crease to the spine end off a practically Mint grading. An unlaminated double-double gatefold. This opens up right to left, then both faces open upwards to make the cover 4-times closed size as seen. The cover includes the front white sticker, also a transparent sticker to its left with red text and a graphic sleeve to store photographs. NINE pictures are all included. Nine was the correct number per album, but apparently 13 exist – one for each song – but to obtain a full set, other copies had to be purchased (or swapped amongst friends). The back cover has the bar-code sticker with the UK catalogue number. Also a graphic red inner sleeve. These are printed on both sides as seen, the list of the songs of these cards is detailed further down. Printed and made in Europe for the UK market.

Cover Front: Three or four tiny press marks on the bottom edge, possibly press gripper blemishes? The odd tiny gentle tip crease. Then immaculate, the title sticker is pristine, as is the transparent one with red text next to it to its left. Quite honest, this looks little short of as-made, clean, fresh and attractive.

Cover Back: The odd tiny edge or tip crease trace, then like new again, the sticker pristine.

The Inside Faces: All superb as-made with nothing to fault, the record and contents are stored in these open out flaps.

Top Edges: Sticker, straight and solid with barely any hint of wear, any blemishes tiny.

Bottom Edges: Largely the same, any blemishes noted above are again tiny. This is an unusually heavy-weight complex cover, so blemishes on these storage edges will rarely be avoided totally.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, all sharp with barely anything to fault.

Spine and Text: Very thick with just a tiny crease on the bottom corner. Very solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and almost parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, the surface clean and fresh with no fading.

Corners: Any corner blemishes are small and light, and there are several on this complex cover. Excellent or better shape retained, a possible very gentle dink on the bottom left – I would doubt too many of these from brand new would not have had tiny blemishes – and this has nothing more.

Cover Summary: A superb all-round example of this unusually lavish cover – at this time, few were made like this due to expense. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT: an unlined card graphic inner sleeve with nothing to fault

The Record Inner Sleeve: MINT(–): this the red graphic inner. Little to fault, any creasing or record impression little, gentle and light. No splits, no repairs, clean and fresh.

The NINE Pictures: ALL MINT: approximately 11 inches in size, the picture graphics are shiny, the rest, including the backs are matt. The glossy pictures are all unscuffed or marked, the white borders still exactly that. All edges razor sharp, uncreased or thickened.

The card songs for these are: ‘Around the Bend’; ‘Mankind’; ‘I’m Open’; ‘Who You Are’; ‘Habit’; ‘Smile’; ‘In My Tree’; ‘Off He Goes’ and ‘Hail, Hail’.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better, this going beyond critical. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy hardly played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Mostly ultra fine wispy removal traces, and of course, purely superficial, few could hope to have less being honest. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare and elusive vinyl album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few will outperform this very well looked-after I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly, if indeed at all, and has been very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
