For the uninitiated: these are the first MODERN (POST-BIG BAND) recordings by Peggy Lee, and they pre-date even her earliest Decca sides, recorded in the mid-to-late 50’s. This is the stuff Jazz Vocals history is made of, and is right up there with the finest works by Billie Holiday, Betty Roche, Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day, Carmen MacRae, Beverly Kenney and Helen Merrill.

This is not a greatest hits  but there are other compilations which cover them. There are hits here (including Golden earrings and Riders in the sky, both #2 hits) but all the tracks here (according to the liner notes) were issued as singles, although the first six tracks were originally released as an 'album' of three 78 rpm singles, collectively titled Peggy Lee Rendezvous (giving it's name to this album).

This is a real treasure trove. Such is the consistent high quality that you couldn't tell from listening to the album which were hits and which were not, but who cares? You can hear Peggy's outstanding renditions of many classic songs and many obscure songs

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written - FOUR times, once in each corner on the back -  in blue ballpoint pen, about 1/4 X 1  inch in size; another set of four signatures, even smaller and practically invisible ones - noted on the fringes of the front panel)

-        Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3   (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the opening side

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
