Massachusetts singer and guitarist Paul Pena arrived in San Francisco in the early 70s with a voice that sounded carved from dark timber. Blind since youth and steeped in blues, gospel and folk, he sang with a grainy authority that made even the simplest phrase feel hard-won - and this debut catches him at the moment everything coheres. 'Woke Up This Morning' opens with a sun-baked country-soul lilt, Pena's baritone spreading across the groove like warm molasses. 'I'm Gonna Make It Alright' turns sly and muscular, guitar and rhythm section moving with a low-slung swagger. By the time 'Lullaby' arrives, the room softens completely, Pena's voice hovering in a slow gospel hush that feels almost devotional.
