Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with minimal faint spindle traces. This appears hardly played and sounds great.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity & Info: Moderate. Less easy with a neat little worn cover that is prone to rubbing, creasing and ring wear. This has the standard original gatefold cover – slightly ones included the gimmick plastic inner inside which was one of the worst ideas ever used on album covers as it damaged the record.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Classic jazz-tinged folk-rock from one of the greatest UK bands within this genre. Basket of Light was their third album of the six initial albums they made – five were issued on this label. Another folk classic from a band who could do no wrong for me. Featuring the fabulous Jacqui McShee on vocals with one of the purest voices within the genre. This album is arguably their very best and it even featured a hit single in ‘Light Flight’ which was used as the theme for the TV series ‘Take Three Girls’. Even in my youth I was immediately attracted to his beautiful song and bought the album when funds allowed. All instrumentation on this set is acoustic, hence pressing quality becomes even more critical. This 1969 issue was pressed by CBS is easily passes the test with great sound and appears little used.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an original unlaminated gatefold format without the gimmick plastic inner sleeve inside – those came later. The surfaces are matt and smooth, the inside spells the word ‘acoustic’ incorrectly as ‘accoustic’. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd with the single thickness card front, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A dark unprotected single thickness surface, so prone to rubbing and creasing which this, bar fine hints on the spine fold and corner tips, has avoided. Clean and still fresh with fine colour and no sticker issues. This front will never prove easy to find better.

Cover Back: Similar again with any rub traces few and faint. The lack of ugly ring wear is always great news on this one as well.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside either with just a tiny crease to the bottom left tip. Personally, I think this cover is way better visually than those poorly conceived gimmick versions with the glued-in plastic inner that invariably wear badly and obscure artwork.

Top Edges: Generally straight and flush with any thickening light.

Bottom Edges: Similar again, possibly slightly more thickened which is no surprise on storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Any thickening to these fragile edges is minimal and very light, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. The record enters on the back, the front being factory machine cut.

Spine and Text: Single thickness spines seldom wear well, but this has little to fault apart from mild whitening of the folds that few can hope to avoid at best. Solid, straight, and unusually erect avoiding compression, flattening or crushing. The actual surface with little wear at all with all text perfect, also beautifully centred as-seen. This is a spine more often seen in very shabby states often with the text eroded.

Corners: The front bottom right tip has a tiny crease and mild wear, but the others are all solid and neat with any rubbing light. Very fine shape is mostly retained with no major knocks

Cover Summary: One of the finer original covers I have had for this album. The general lack of wear or ageing is seldom seen and this should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a plain white unlined inner that has age discolouration and the catalogue number on one top right corner. Two neat window circles, hardly creased with all edges naturally intact. This as the ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very impressive visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed at way above average weight. A copy appearing little played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant acoustic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This has ultimate detail and dynamics, the separation fantastic as is the production. Pressed to a standard by CBS, any surface sounds are minimal indeed with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Not all were made to this standard, I have heard several copies with pressing crackle and rasps that ruin it – no such issues with this one. Few available first issues will match, let outperform this I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
