Bei Pepe Romeros "Flamenco“, eine Aufnahme von 1987, handelt es sich um eine rein traditionelle Flamencoplatte, die nicht nur sein ihm eigenes gediegenes Gitarrenspiel bietet, sondern auch den ausdrucksvollen Gesang von Chano Lobato und zusätzlich, in einem Anflug von Inspiration, wie sie leider bisher zu wenige Flamencomusiker hatten, ein echtes Flamencotänzerpaar, Maria Magdalena und Paco Romero. Flamenco ist, genau besehen, Tanzmusik, und ebenso wie bei einigen Formen von englischem Kontratanz, dem Holzschuhtanz aus den Appalachen oder anderer volkstümlicher Musik ist das rhythmische, manchmal stampfende Geräusch der Schuhe der Tänzer (ebenso wie die traditionellen Kastagnetten der Tänzerinnen) als Teil der Musik gedacht. Dadurch weist "Flamenco" eine Lebendigkeit und Erregung auf, die bei klassischen Flamencoplatten oft fehlen, wodurch letztere oft ein bisschen verstaubt und überseriös wirken. Lobatos Stimme, ein leicht verschleierter Alt mit wunderbar kontrolliertem Vibrato, passt perfekt zur Musik, indem er die blühende Theatralik des Flamenco einfängt, ohne aber zu übertreiben. Es gibt zweifellos bessere Flamencoplatten als diese, aber kaum eine, an der man mehr Freude hat..
A strictly traditional flamenco record, Pepe Romero's 1987 recording "Flamenco" features not only his own sterling guitar work, but also singer Chano Lobato's expressive vocals and, in an inspired touch that not enough flamenco artists have thought of, two genuine flamenco dancers, Maria Magdalena and Paco Romero. "Flamenco", after all, is dance music, and as in some forms of English contra dancing, Appalachian clog dancing, and other forms of folk music, the percussive sound of the dancers' shoes (and the female dancer's traditional castanets) is intended as part of the music. As a result, "Flamenco" has a vitality and excitement often missing from classical flamenco records, which can sometimes come off as a bit stuffy and overly serious. Lobato's voice, a dusky alto with a beautifully controlled vibrato, suits the material perfectly, capturing the florid theatricality of flamenco music without going over the top. There are undoubtedly better flamenco records than this, but there are few that are as much fun.
