Label: VERVE Number: MGV - 8365 Year: 1959 Vinyl Condition: EXCELLENT very minor, minimal scuffs and surface scratches. I have played this LP, a few seconds per track, and there were no skips. There are very few pops. I was very impressed, in fact if I collected jazz rather than blues, this LP would not be listed. The sound is extremely decent, especially for an Lp of this age. See the picture below as well. Label Condition: EXCELLENT PLUS no spindle marks, super clean, may have not been played by the looks of the label. Cover Condition: VERY GOOD there is a 5.5" split at the top and the original price sticker, otherwise the cover is in excellent shape. Tracks: SIDE ONE: CHEROKEE SOMETIMES I'M HAPPY BODY AND SOUL AVALON SIDE TWO: BUT NOT FOR ME BLUES FOR LESLIE IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOU TROUBLE IN MIND REVIEW: Pete Brown had an unusual and distinctive swing-based style that sometimes used staccato phrases that were speech-like. Starting originally on piano and also for a time doubling on trumpet, Pete Brown's main ax was the alto by the time he came to New York in 1927 with Bernie Robinson's band. Brown worked many short-time engagements with obscure bandleaders in New York but, starting in the mid-'30s, he often teamed up on excellent records with the underrated trumpeter Frankie Newton. They were both members of the early version of John Kirby's small group in 1937 before departing. Brown worked steadily throughout the late '30s and '40s, often on 52nd Street and sometimes as a bandleader. However, the rise of bop in the mid-'40s resulted in him being neglected and ill health led to him being only semi-active in the 1950s. Brown's recorded appearance at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival found him past his prime and being completely overshadowed by Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge. It is best to search out Pete Brown's many sideman appearances on records from the late '30s, particularly a Newton session from 1939 with James P. Johnson. EXTRA INFORMATION: I am listing a very extensive collection of over a thousand 33 RPM LP's. These records were obtained from a fellow who was a record company excecutive 30 years ago. Ninty percent of the vinyl in this collection is mint to near mint. Many have had the celophane removed, but have never touched a needle - virgin vinyl. I realize the magnitude of what mint means, but many of the records to be listed are better than near mint, so please forgive the terminology in that regard. Included in this collection are many audiophile records, picture discs, promotional records, sealed records and other pieces that were only available to those inside the business. If you are seeking anything in particular, let me know and we will endeavour to find it and list it sooner than later. Please email if you have any questions well in advance of bidding. Due to the rarity of these albums I would strongly suggest to not wait until the last minute to bid. Don't risk getting shut out! S/H is the actual postal rate, quoted from the post office plus $1.50 handling. Records will be shipped boarded between cardboard. Multiple record wins will be shipped boxed.
