PETE SEEGER Talking Union 1957 Folkways Pressing FP 85-1 w/Booklet EX/VG+

Talking Union and Other Union Songs pairs the Almanac Singers’ original 1941 labor recordings with new 1955 sessions by Pete Seeger and a chorus billed as “the Song Swappers” — a lineup that included a teenage Mary Travers, later of Peter, Paul and Mary, and Erik Darling, later of The Weavers. The title track and “Which Side Are You On?” remain touchstones of American labor and protest music; the original 1941 Almanac Singers session was added to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry in 2010 for its historical significance.

This is an early Folkways pressing on FP 85-1 (labels read FH 5285). The Side II label carries the credit “Custom molded by Plastylite” — the New Jersey plant best known for pressing Blue Note and Prestige jazz sides, an unusual crossover to see on a Folkways title. The Folkways address printed on both labels and the booklet, 117 W. 46th Street, N.Y.C., was in use circa 1957–1961, placing this specific copy in that window rather than at the 1955 release date carried over from the copyright line.

The front cover carries the original blue paste-on artwork by Carlis. The jacket is Folkways’ hardbound black book-style construction with two interior pockets — one holding the record, one holding the included booklet.

Complete with the original 8-page lyric booklet, featuring liner notes by Pete Seeger and historian Philip S. Foner, and the original plain inner sleeve. The Side 1 label carries a period ownership sticker from a Brown University student — a small piece of collector provenance from the era. Side 1 deadwax includes a small hand-etched mark alongside the main matrix stamp.
