Label/Format: Blue Horizon – original format with matt textured surfaces, the outer rim ring is smooth. Later ones had a more smooth finish.

Label Conditions & Info: Both practically as made: yes some small ‘chip’ marks are seen on the close-up picture mainly on side two. But these are purely within manufacture, the definitive proof of this is the lettering is NOT chipped on the tiny white spot areas. So these white spots are NOT chips at all and purely tiny blemishes in the pale blue ink plate whilst printing. All the text and logo are in deep blue, and all is perfect. Both labels are fresh, clean and attractive and barely aged at all. Any evidence of spindle marks are tiny, very fine and faint, I even had to view the hole area under bright angled light (as per my music area scrutiny), even with a magnifier. This record has been played little and is another typical piece from the one owner who worked in a record pressing factory. Many of which I have been, and still am offering, thus a number of CBS pressed records (as well as others). This is a superbly preserved Blue Horizon record, a few gentle superficial surface ‘friction’ traces only on side two, but with no sound whatsoever, this first issue mono record plays beautifully. Not only that, the cover is in equally superb condition, and that is just as hard as the record itself. Indeed both elements of this legendary blues set could prove significant upgrades for many collectors.

Brief Info: The self-titled debut album from the legendary blues-era Fleetwood Mac from 1968. With the equally famous ‘dog and dustbin’ cover artwork, this vintage album sounds nothing like the commercial AOR band that sold millions of albums in the latter 1970s and beyond. Fronted by Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer, vocals are shared by both. This was real British blues and on one of the most famous labels within the genre. It proved successful, peaking at No 4 in the UK charts even though it included no singles. A beautiful very early mono copy and it plays beautifully with clean, distortion-free sound – it appears little played with any visual blemishes very gentle and totally superficial. This is a diamond for any blues fan and collector, the famous cover will seldom be seen better. Even that perilous unprotected spine is practically unworn as made with ALL text intact and present. Certainly up there with the best I have seen.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): a single format with the front laminated, this wraps around the top and bottom edges into the inside and not on to the back. The spine is not laminated, hence vulnerable and fragile and rarely seen even half this fine. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd and includes the ‘Patent Pending’ text – as all seen on my close-up pictures.

Lamination & Front: By anyone’s standards, this 1968 first-issue cover is exceptional, I will rarely even contemplate even thinking about offering a cover of this considerable age in this type of condition – but this one really merits it. It is a pure delight to hold and view with a freshness that is rarely seen on such a wear-prone and delicate cover – the back especially so. The laminate is ultra clean with supreme shine and just oozes freshness with barely even a hint or trace of any dulling even seen under angled light. Any rim impression is close to non-existant and how often will no dulling be seen around the shape after 46 years? There is no lifting and any of the tiny few surfaces creases, fine and faint mostly as edge hairlines. Even the corners are crisp and unrubbed and there are no press marks. Even the unprotected fine strips on the right and left sides has no issues, grubbiness or wear – and important are still present indicating the right entrance edge is purely natural and not been trimmed or enhanced. That famous ‘Dog & Dustbin’ graphic will rarely be seen looking better on an original mono cover – just look at the close-up of arguably rock’s most famous dog.

Cover Back: If the front is impressive, the back is little short of exceptional. Very wear-prone indeed being matt black finished this is susceptible to fingermarks, rubbing and especially ringwear of which this has avoided. Any handling traces are few and faint and this is totally uncreased. The only hint of a (possible) rub, near the top edge, I am sure is actually a minor printing glitch. This really does retain an incredible freshness and deep blackness, an absolute beauty and, like the front, will prove immensely difficult to match or find better. Truly, this is as close to as-made as they ever get these days.

Top Edge: Thin and very straight with no wear at all.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp, this has that natural more rustic manufactured trim and these are not razor sharp. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as viewed-end on, the record enters on this edge which is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: So if the back is incredibly hard to find like the one explained and photographed above, the spine is near impossible. This vulnerable and uncompromising area has survived looking practically as new. Exceptional hardly covers it really: this spine has no laminate protection but still in supreme condition. Solid, straight, uncompressed with the text pristine percent, and for good measure, perfectly centred on a very narrow depth. Yes, as can be seen on my close-up areas of the spine, all text is as made. Most spines like this are seen badly rubbed, devoid of text, even threadbare, they hardly get much better. These factors are the difference between average and truly exceptional.

Corners: All corners are in equally wonderful condition and devoid of wear, rubbing, creasing and totally dink-free. Shape is little short of perfect as well.

Cover Summary: A truly beautiful all-round example of this famous late 1960’s cover, this is approaching connoisseur territory and again, this cover could prove a huge upgrade for many. Finding this better will prove beyond difficult, one that should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down for a small repaired near tear on one of the window circles. A very basic plain white unlined inner but includes the important ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ text. Hardly aged with minimal discolouration or creasing. All edges unsplit with no repairs, the top entrance edge still crisp and neat.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: purely based on the fine superficial surface scuffs that are of those ultra fine and gentle type. I fail to see how these types can really be caused by an owner or usage, I am close to certain they are a mild blemish trait of manufacture and anyway, totally superficial and non-sounding. This record in real respect is better than this grading and plays beautifully. Still an impressive vintage mono record, generally clean with equally fine shine, intense black and solidly pressed. The surface to my eyes had no stylus marks, merely friction type gentle surface marks only, for a mono record, this is still a distance above average and I am sure it has been played very little at all. Most will know what these types are usually found like. Not the for visual perfectionist, but many, if not most collectors will treasure this.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark blues record that introduced the world to this legendary band plays even above it very fine visual grading with hardly anything to fault at all. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Excellent production and impressive clean sound makes for the most pleasurable experience, it delivers the music quite differently to the stereo version of course. Any surface sound minimal, hardly any at all in fact and faint, all those superb details on this beautifully preserved record are truly outstanding. A more punchy, warm sound from mono. A clean pressing with no audible manufacture issues and tracking effortless. Mono classics of this vintage are seldom heard cleaner and sound better, this too played on clinical stereo equipment for which this was not really designed for. But when found like this, they are pieces of genuine beauty, most ruined by heavy usage on heavy tracking Dansettes and the like. A blues masterpiece in overall lovely condition – great clean sound and a magnificent cover. Strongly recommended and not to be lost lightly.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
