*This title was the second volume of Peter Hammill’s song lyrics, poems, short stories, etc. to be published.  The first, ‘Killers, Angels, Refugees’ covered the period up to 1974, the year of its publication by Charisma Books.

‘Mirrors, Dreams, and Miracles’, published in 1982 by Peter Hammill’s own Sofa Sound imprint, was the follow-up to ‘Killers, Angels, Refugees’ and features lyrics from some of Peter’s many solo albums, from ‘In Camera’ up to ‘A Black Box’.

The book was originally intended as a volume of short stories and a draft was completed as early as 1975.  Peter met his publishing deadline, only for the intended publishing company to go out of business.  Peter subsequently discarded or rewrote many of the short stories, but a few survived when he self-published ‘Mirrors, Dreams, and Miracles’ in 1982.

CONDITION

The book is complete, with all its pages in place & an intact binding showing no signs of disintegration.  The pages, despite their age, exhibit little or no discolouration.

The cover, while intact, does show some clear signs of signs of wear & tear (see pictures).  The worst defect is a slanting rectangular indentation covering most of the title on the front cover, caused by something being placed on top of the book (I absolutely can’t remember what!).  This is a shame (1) as although the indentation does not actually penetrate the fairly thick front cover, it is clearly apparent when viewed against the light, & (2) because the rest of the cover is in really quite good condition for its age, with only minor scuffs & abrasions.  There are areas of black ink loss running up the leading edge of the spine & minor creases to the lower corners of both front & back covers.

In general, this is a good copy of this rare 1st edition (which probably sold even fewer copies than ‘Killers, Angels, Refugees’), & is among the best of those I’ve seen (some of which have pages missing).
