Pharoah played the role of the east coast’s 1980’s L.A. Glam Scene. Pharoah was best known for their outrageous stage antics, half blond and half black hairdo’s and beat-conscious rock ‘n’ roll. Armed with their self-indoctrinated credo “Sex, Glam, Rock n Roll " The band would dominate the tri-state area’s music scene during the 1980’s.With Pharoah being on everyone’s “A” list for record executive parties, (including guests like Paul Schaeffer, Jeff Beck, Gene Simmons and Joey Ramone), it wouldn’t be long before a company like CBS Records would rush in to capitalize on the band’s success. But the turn of the decade would bring a dramatic change in the music industry, and the band would find themselves faced with a “too much, too soon” reality. Not willing to compromise, Pharoah would step aside and wait for the cycle to come around again before reuniting to awaken the ghosts of Rock n Roll past. During their career, Pharoah would open for multiple national acts, release two records on their own label (Lipstick East), showcase a video on MTV’s “Headbanger’s Ball”, appear on over a dozen cable shows including Manhattan Cable’s “New Music Show”, “Tucci at Two”, CTN Networks “The Underground Café”, “U-68”, and South Jersey’s “TV35”. The band would cause quite a stir amongst local viewers, however, live that stir turned into shock, and shock at it’s best. Veterans of the stage, Pharoah played such venues like “The Cat Club”, “Club Nirvana”, “CBGB’s”, “The Limelight”, “Studio One” and “The Dirt Club” to name a few. With rave reviews in “East Coast Rocker’s” center-fold (August 27th, 1986) and a full-page feature in “Rock Magazine” (November, 1988), rock ‘n’ roll’s best kept secret would gain national notoriety and develop a loyal fan-base that still stands the test-of-time.
CHRONOLOGY
1985: Nelson Pop joins the band after replacing drummer Steven Reigns and the final lineup is complete. The band acquires their first management deal and heads into the studio to start work on their debut album "First Strike."
1986: The release of their debut album "First Strike" on Lipstick East Records hits the market sending record sales soaring. The release of an audiocassette would follow featuring a bonus track titled "Gonna Get U." The band gains instant popularity and starts opening for national acts.
1987: The band releases their second vinyl effort, a "Limited Edition of 100" picture disc. "Red Flag" would become the soundtrack for the video and the band would continue to tour for the rest of the year.
1988: "Red Flag" the music video is released and premiers on MTV's "Headbanger's Ball." The band would share much success and would start appearing on many cable TV shows and magazine publications.
1989: "Cleopatra's Ball" would kick-off the year with a U.S. tour starting in Philadelphia. Now headlining their own shows, the band would continue to tour. Plans for a new video were in production - but tensions were looming. With their management contract running out and the decade screaming to a halt, the band would soon part their own ways.
1991: After taking a break for a year and a half, the band reunites again, this time without Rikk and the "Feast Of Fools" tour kicks off. The band plays the first half of the tour before finally calling it quits.
2011: Pharoah joins Cinderalla for the middle of the "Glam Slam Tour 2011" celebrating 25 years of Glam Rock music.
TODAY: Original members Karl DeKira, Rikk Fabio, Dennis Lords, Nelson Pop and Scott Archer still make occasional appearances and remain active recording new material.
THE BAND ON STAGE The setting is ancient Egypt, where chosen royalty weren’t that difficult to spot. They were the chaps with baldheads and one flowing blond lock of hair. Naturally, when they walked down the street, heads turned, and that’s certainly not a bad reaction. So, when five New Jersey musicians decided to reach for the gold in music circles, they unashamedly borrowed a few time-tested principles, beginning with the name Pharoah. Next came the jewelry, make-up, eye-riveting lingerie, but, how about the hair? Well, sacrifice is one thing, but becoming a skinhead is quite another. So, they reached a compromise - while the length remained intact, peroxide helped pull off a neat color combination. After some eight years kicking around the metropolitan New York club scene, things are finally starting to happen and, as drummer Nelson Pop says, “We’re ready to do it. Things are continuing to look more positive by the day.” Trying to capture the essence of Pharoah on vinyl is admittedly a strong order, even by lead singer Karl Dekira’s own admission, “it takes people two or three times seeing us to realize, “Hey, there’s some good music here.” The reason is pure and simple - Pharoah’s on-stage antics leave the likes of KISS and Motley Crue in the dust, if visual impact is any criteria. For starters, the billed “Independent Circus” delivers everything but the elephants, tigers and bears, though the dancing go-go girls, Lisa and Stacy, have earned notoriety for their sultry animalistic moves. But what about the bottom line - the music? With a note of satisfaction, Karl states, “We’ve created a sound that everyone gets off on. Despite appearances, we’re totally serious about our music. Most of the time I write the lyrics and some of the music, the guys fill in the rest so that it really belongs to everyone. You can never tell when ideas are going to hit. A couple of times, the guys were busy teasing their hair, and I wrote a new song. We’ve worked it out in the back of the room, got up on the stage, and went with it.” Consistency is the norm for the past three years as Karl remarked, “We’re real solid now and know each other’s faults. With any band, there’s a whole lot of friction. It can be painful and rough, until you hook up with the right people. “As far as the record, we’re not sitting around waiting.
