Description
I bought this record new in 1970 from an import shop in Melbourne, Discurios, which was one of the few record retailers that stocked this style of music at that time. The vinyl on both sides is still in good condition and both sides play LOUD and clear, however there are numerous fine scuffs from taking the record in and out of the paper inner sleeve. I have graded the vinyl as G+ due to the appearance, sound wise it plays as VG with only some low level surface noise on the run in tracks. masked while the music is playing, no deep scratches, skips or jumps. I have placed the record inside a plastic inner sleeve, inside the original impulse paper inner sleeve to prevent further scuffing. Both labels are clean, no stickers or writing. The cover is a heavy cardboard gate fold with a laminated front and back, and a dull sheen on the inner covers. There is some light wear to the laminate front and back and has started to lift near the spine on the front, but has not torn(see Photo 1) . The inner covers are both clean, however there is some light yellowing along the top and the opening from years of storage. The spine is still rigid and can be easily read in the shelf. I have graded the cover as G+. The track on side one, "The Creator Has A Master Plan" actually continues on side two and lasts for 32:40 overall. The other track on side 2 "Colors" lasts for 5:37, I draw attention to this because the track listing on the back list "The Creator Has A Master Plan", "Light Of Love", and "Colors" with no reference to which side of the record they are on, and the record labels have "The Creator Has A Master Plan" as the whole of side one, which is correct, and "Colors" as the whole of side 2, which is wrong as the opening track is a continuation of side one. "Light of Love" does not appear on the record label. The music on this album is representative of a divergent stream of the avant-garde movement in jazz in the 1960's which has been loosely termed "spiritual jazz" but for the most part is still a vehicle for free improvisation. Sanders had appeared on John Coltrane's "Meditations" album and shared the Tenor sax leads with him in an earlier exploration of this genre. This album has a more acessible format with vocals by Leon Thomas and more formal rhythms. There are several audio clips of this album on you tube if you want to hear what it sounds like. ABC label, which was used from 1967-1972 were the last Impulse pressings recommended in audiophile circles for their quality sound.
