In short, Seastones is electronic music of the best kind -- a shifting sonic landscape out of which the strangest things may emerge. The album isn't an instant absorption device like good new age, mind you -- this isn't space music. Instead, it's a peculiar type of mind game involving familiar names (members of the Grateful Dead, David Crosby, Grace Slick) and doing unfamiliar things to and with them, with the aid of primitive microcomputers and less-than-reliable early-'70s synthesizers. This Ryko release combines both the February 1975 version that was released and the December 1975 version (actually an extension through an additional six "moment-forms") that was left on the shelf. The released version is eleven and a half minutes longer and, in many respects, harder and less contemplative throughout, the more prominent voice work giving it an odd air of mystery and coldness.

Quadraphonic recordings of the early 70's may have died an ignoble death because of their hopeless incompatibility with the existing stereo and mono equipment (they can be played on stereo equipment, but not to the full effect) yet, they live on in the hearts of the collectors, and for good reason: some of the finest audiophile recordings ever made - whether rock, soul or classical, were released on some of these, little known and poorly advertised, albums. And, what a gorgeous presentation these recordings are: Sheets of surround-sounds, cascades of orchestration ranging from pianissimo to crescendo, textures which do not exist in any audio- or virtual space and channel separation that is truly a jaw-dropping experience.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP; HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS EXCELLENT OR VG++

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a slight warp along the top seam; this has absolutely no effect on the record.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the back panel (a minor cover construction flaw)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No glue traces or wax residue.
