Description

PHIL MOORE ORCHESTRA -- Modern Classics - Concerto for Piano & Other Selections -- original 1948 (??) U.S. album.  Insanely rare first pressing on the legendary late 1940's Discovery jazz label (Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus etc.) by groundbreaking African American jazz pianist, composer & bandleader Phil Moore, who played with Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra and others, worked on the soundtracks for CABIN IN THE SKY and THIS GUN FOR HIRE, and helped discover Dorothy Dandridge, among many accomplishments in a long career.  This album features a number of highly ambitious Moore jazz compositions inc. "Misty Moon Blues," "125th St. Prophet" and "Concerto for Piano & Orchestra," performed by a group that included pianist Calvin Jackson, trumpeter Gerald Wilson, bass players Red Callender and Artie Shapiro and others.  These tracks were apparently re-released years later on the Verve album "Fantasy for Girl & Orchestra" -- this original release on the Discovery label is almost completely unknown (in fact, any album releases on the original Discovery label are incredibly difficult to come by).  Primitive cover features a lightweight pink paper wrapping around thick cardboard, with two large pieces of rectangular paper pasted on the front (!) with the name of the group and Discovery Records; the right side opening edge triangles were apparently hand-painted dark purple at the factory.  See photo for track list.  Cover:  Fair only, 3" separation in paper wrapping at upper left spine, age wear & surface wear in paper wrapping, wear at corners, abrasion in surface at middle left bottom on the front.  Record:  VG-, light to moderate surface marks, light surface noise in spots from quality of original pressing, overall fairly clean, on thick heavyweight vinyl, Discovery label, U.S. press.
