Spector believed he could produce a record for the holidays that would capture not only the essence of the Christmas spirit, but also be a pop masterpiece that would stand against any work these artists had already done. He succeeded on every level, with all four groups/singers recording some of their most memorable performances. This is the Christmas album by which all later holiday releases had to be judged, and it has inspired a host of imitators.

Ladies and Gentleman - welcome to a truly interdenominational Christmas! We always found it amusing/amazing that one of the most heartfelt and beautiful - not to mention original - Christmas albums ever recorded came from a Jewish guy in his early 20’s. Not only did this unorthodox attempt at mixing Christmas with Brooklyn aesthetics circa 1963 survived, it aged with such infinite grace that it became a perennial Christmas classic. The wall of sound - a production method patented by Phil Spector (which involved - inter alia - torturing and tormenting his artists for maximum sonic effect (just ask the surviving Ramones who were pistol-whipped by Good Ole Phillie, or Tina Turner who was tormented so brutally during the recording of "River Deep, Mountain High" that the legend has it her super-compressed bra fell apart in the studio – a very early example of wardrobe malfunction) - does not get any more vivid or palpable than here. This is a proverbial fortress of sound, consisting of multitude of overlapping layers of voices, sound effects, cascades of rhythm and ornamentation, AND IT COMES IN ITS ORIGINAL, GLORIOUS , BACK-TO-MONO version. A joyful, luscious, retrogressive, aņal-retentive, guilty-pleasure joy of Christmas past. Phil Spector is king!!! Look, maybe he really didn’t kill Lana Clarkson, OK? But even if he did, so what? We forgive him on the strength of this album alone. Phillie may never receive clemency from the Governator, but we grant him ours. For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship,  revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, this album was voted one of top-100 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted in 1987 by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals   (click here  for the complete album listing)

(b)          The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
