It didn't take much to get me to try a musical oddity or two from the UK in the 60's, and this was one such venture. I was immediately hooked. While this doesn't "rock" a great deal (it is pure pop),it sure does FLOW, it is well orchestrated, and the tunes just stick in your head. Here 40 or so years later, I still find myself humming "Yo Yo Thoughts." Sadly, the album got essentially no promotion from its small label, and I suppose the band name and album cover didn't give anyone much of a clue either. Until the last few years, I had no idea Mark Wirtz had an appreciable discography and pedigree in the UK pop scene. Stylistically this belongs alongside groups like the Fortunes, David and Jonathan, and so on.

Philwit & Pegasus were not an actual group, but an odd one-off studio project by producer Mark Wirtz. In the late '60s, Wirtz was known primarily as the creator of rock-influenced easy listening mood music albums, and also as the producer of the fine British psychedelic pop band Tomorrow. Wirtz was co-writer and producer of Tomorrow's huge British 1967 hit, "Excerpt from a Teenage Opera," and at the time there was speculation that it was indeed a prelude to an entire concept album/rock opera. That opera was never completed. But Wirtz did get a chance to devise a concept album of sorts in 1970 with Philwit & Pegasus's self-titled album for Chapter One Records. Wirtz's idea was to make a sort of movie-on-record LP, and he wrote a song cycle of sorts with his girlfriend of the time, Maria Feltham. There really wasn't a plot or narrative to the album, though Wirtz has said that the theme was "struggle, fear, and fantasized happiness." It would not be quite accurate to say that Wirtz and Feltham were the two members of Philwit & Pegasus, for neither of them actually played or sang on the album. The vocal parts were taken by John Carter (himself a noted hit songwriter of the era), Peter Lee Stirling, Chas Mills, Guy Fletcher, and Roger Greenaway (another songwriter involved in the writing of numerous British pop hits). Among the session musicians were noted players such as guitarists Chris Spedding (listed in the credits as Chris Bedding) and Joe Moretti, and drummers Clem Cattini and Terry Cox (the latter of the folk-rock group Pentangle). The conception and ambition behind Philwit & Pegasus were more interesting than its reality. It in fact consisted of mediocre pop songs that drew from both easy listening and rock, though the arrangements were lush and varied, at times influenced by folk-rock harmonies, at others by histrionic Tom Jones-styled crooning, theatrical musicals, and the Beach Boys. The album flopped, and Wirtz moved to Hollywood the following year.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover has some tiny, faint, barely visible writing on its back side (a few checkmarks noted next to 2 song titles)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine (nothing significant)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams (yet)

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
