Description

PIERRE HENRY Variations Pour Une Porte Et Un Soupir. Original French pressing on the Philips label (836.898 DSY) from 1965. The silverfoil cover is excellent+ and the record is near mint.

Beautiful original reflective silver cover issue of this seminal work of musique concrete "Variations for a door and a sigh," ingeniously derived entirely from recordings of breathing, a creaking door, and a musical saw. "These basic sound premises were then mixed, transformed, and composed using all the resources of recording tape, as a whole or in fragments, for their rhythm or for their melody, with multiple variations in intensity, pitch, etc." The door "becomes in turn a violin, a bassoon, a saxophone, a muted trumpet or a motorcycle... " while the sighs "become a soft breeze, the bellows of a forge, a far-away church bell or the hooting of an owl..." A highly recommended classic of the genre.

Artist info:
Henry studied under Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen, and together with Pierre Schaeffer founded the world's first tape music studio; the Groupe de Recherches Musicales/INA-GRM became a center of study for electroacoustic pioneers like Francois Bayle, Michel Chion, Michel Philippot, Philippe Arthuys, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bernard Mache, Ivo Malec, Bernard Parmegiani, Michel Redolfi, Ragnar Grippe, Jon Appleton, Jean Michel Jarre, Jean-Claude Risset, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Francis Dhomont, Guy Reibel, Edgar Varese, Jacques Lejeune, Jean Schwarz, Ilhan Mimaroglu, and Iannis Xenakis. Henry's groundbreaking work would influence contemporaries like John Cage, Tod Dockstader, Cecil Leuter, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Mort Garson, Bruce Haack, Paul Beaver, Bernie Krause, Claude Denjean, Dick Hyman, Electrosoniks/Electrosonicks, Tom Dissevelt, Dick Raaijmakers, Gershon Kingsley, Jean-Jacques Perrey, Kraftwerk, and Piero Umiliani. He has worked with Nicolas Schoffer, Urban Sax, Spooky Tooth, Coldcut, DJ Vadim, William Orbit, Fatboy Slim and Funki Porcini.

From allmusic:
"The celebrated French composer Pierre Henry was among the pivotal forces behind the development of musique concrète, becoming the first formally educated musician to devote his energies to the electronic medium. Born in Paris on December 9, 1927, he began training at the Paris Conservatoire at the age of ten, studying piano under Nadia Boulanger and percussion under Felix Passerone while also attending the classes of Olivier Messiaen. Still, Henry had little regard for traditional musical instruments, preferring instead to experiment privately with non-musical sound sources; over time, he grew fascinated with the notion of incorporating noise into the compositional process, and perhaps unsurprisingly first attracted notice in performing circles for his prowess as a percussionist.
