Description
The infamous riot gig at The Ritz, New York, 15th May 1981. Long playing 7" in a plastic picture sleeve. The band played behind a screen and the crowd didn't take too kindly to this and got a bit boisterous resulting in the band getting escorted out of the venue after about 20 minutes to stop them from getting lynched. Everything hit the stage - bottles, shoes, chairs, the lot. The screen got trashed too. It was a real happening. All this and it's been autographed by Johnny Rotten!!! There weren't many of these unofficial releases pressed so this could possibly be the only autographed copy on the planet. A real piece of history. Can you afford to miss it?
This is a rare beast in it's own right but as it's been handled and autographed by Johnny, it takes it onto another plain altogether. I met him at the Glasgow Apollo stage door, 16th November 1983 on PIL's first visit to Scotland when This Is Not A Love Song was in the charts. I was standing on my own and he walked past me without breaking breath on the way in to the soundcheck and again on the way out. What an arrogant b*stard I thought. Still, I waited for him to return to play the gig as I wanted to say hello and get some stuff autographed (the support band were First Priority who were utter sh*te so I wasn't interested in seeing them anyway). As I stood freezing and he was about to walk past me again I said, "For f*ck sake Johnny, you've walked past me twice already. I've been buying your records since '76 and I'm freezing my *rse off. The least you can do is say hello!". He said that he was sorry but he hated touring and just wanted to get the gig over with. I asked if he was playing any Pistols songs and he said maybe. Anyway, I whipped out this item, the Anarchy first pressing on EMI (the one with the Chris Thomas credit on both sides) and the first PIL album cover and he signed the singles on their labels (Anarchy's faded a bit) and the album on his cheek. He also signed the cardboard sleeve that Anarchy was in as I'd left the black bag at home (I don't recall silver pens being available in those days). He apologised again and smiled and asked if I was going into the gig as he shook my hand and as I answered yes, he turned and walked in to the venue. They played Anarchy and the place went mental. It's was the only time I ever saw the bouncers panic at the Apollo. As well as this item, Anarchy with its black bag and the cardboard sleeve it was in can be seen in the picture too. Sorry, Anarchy isn't for sale.
